We love lists, we all do. So in keeping with the human penchant for lists we present a list of the top least intelligent dog breeds. As you go through the list you will notice that these are popular dog breeds and these noble animals win us over with their loyalty, personable nature, affection, and courage. Now you don’t keep a pet dog to do math – so why is intelligence an issue. Well, its not really, it’s more an issue of how easy it is to house-break your dog, toilet train it and maybe teach it to follow simple commands. If your dog doesn’t, don’t fret coz’ dogs are truly unique and beautiful pets.
Another thing worth noting is that hounds usually make up a fair portion of any list of dumb dog breeds. Also, any dog lover will detect a pattern here that its mostly the ancient dog breeds most closely related to the wolf that usually end up being labeled dumb or least intelligent.
The Borzoi – The Borzoi or the Russian Hound is often considered less intelligent than other dog breeds because of its independent nature. It is not very keen to please its master and you may have to repeat an instruction a few times before your pet ambles off to do the task. But those who own Borzois swear by their loyalty and affection. I guess, it’s a creature of vast open spaces and a hound at that – it is a combination that makes you a little headstrong perhaps.
The Bulldog – The Bulldog perhaps epitomizes the bull-headed dog in popular culture. Anytime you want to show a tough but slow dog – you have a bulldog. The truth; however, is that bulldogs are gentle and protective pets. Add resoluteness and dignity to their character mix and you get perhaps the Saxon characteristics – a creature that may be slow on the uptake but it will get the job done.
The Basenji – popularly known as the only breed of which dogs are incapable of barking – basenjis emit a yelp or a sound similar to a human crying. I guess if the dog doesn’t even know how to bark – it will get tagged as stupid. This breed has been reported as being tough to train. On an average with any breed that is difficult to train, you need to drill a new instruction 100 times or more before the animal picks it up. Whether it will respond to the instruction once learnt – that depends on its mood. Remember, not all dogs are driven to please their masters.
The Afghan Hound – The Afghan Hound usually tops the list of hard-to-train dogs. As mentioned earlier, this by no means implies that these animals are dumb. It’s just that they are hounds that are born to hunt and they disdain menial herding work. Perhaps it’s an ancient breed that is still in touch with its old wolf-self.
A great piece here in defense of “dumb dogs”.
i think this is mean and inappropriate to call them dumb!
