Pet Safety During Halloween

Any time our daily routine is changed, we feel the difference. It has an effect on our mind and body. It’s no different with our pets. Pet parents should take care that they make Halloween as stress-free as they can for their beloved pets.

• One of the best things that you can do for your pet on the 31st of October is to keep it inside the house. There is a very real danger of your pet getting teased, hurt, or even stolen by miscreants who might consider it a fun thing to do on Halloween.

• Do not under any condition let your pet cat or dog eat candies or chocolates. You may be tempted to pass on some tasty tidbits to your pet and your pet may actually get frisky demanding some of the stuff that you are eating. Beware! Chocolate is poisonous to both dogs and cats and most candies contain some chemical or the other that can interfere with your pet’s metabolism.

• Cats are curious animals and dogs too can be unpredictable; do not take a chance with burning candles and jack-o-lanterns. Keep your pets away from these. A swish from your dog’s tail could upset a candle and start a fire.

• Do not force Halloween costumes on your pet if you can make out that the animal is getting uncomfortable in them. What may be fun for us is very often a source of great irritation for the animal. Masks on your pet’s face are not a good idea. It can agitate the animal.

• Your pet may not be very receptive to a steady stream of visitors to your house on Halloween Day. Unless the animal is not bothered by crowds and is used to seeing people come and go, it’s best to keep it in a separate room where it will not be bothered by loud noises and strange smells. Instruct visitors to not feed the pet. Leave the animal with some food and water and it will do fine.
