Symptoms of Stomach Flip in a Dog

Stomach flip in dogs is a serious problem, and if not fixed immediately, your dog can actually die from this condition. Dog’s stomachs can twist and rotate, as the stomach is not really attached to anything inside and is not completely stationary. There’s a surgery that can be done, but you have to recognize the signs and symptoms of bloat and stomach twist and act promptly.

The causes of stomach twist and bloat are not really known. It seems that dogs who have nervous dispositions might be more prone, and large dogs who have more room in their abdomen for the stomach to move also seem to have a higher propensity for this condition. With more room available in the dog’s body, it seems it is easier for the stomach to flip, bringing the spleen with it and closing off the stomach.

Critical signs of stomach flip:

1. Your dog begins to vomit suddenly, but nothing comes up.

2. There is heavy saliva along with the dry heaving.

3.His general condition starts to deteriorate rapidly

4.Your dog’s stomach starts to swell and becomes very hard. The size of the stomach can increase dramatically.

5. There is heavy panting as your pet struggles to breathe. He may lie flat on his chest with outstretched legs to help him breathe easier.

6. The lining of his eyes and his gums become pale.

7. Your dog’s pulse is rapid.

8. He is obviously in great pain and very frightened. He might shut down at this point, and be very listless.

If you suspect stomach flip and your dog is showing these symptoms, take him to the veterinarian immediately. But what should you do besides rushing him to the vet’s as fast as possible?

Talk to your dog and reassure him.
Try to stay calm so as not to frighten him even more. Dogs can sense your emotions, and a calm you means a calmer him.
Let him choose the position he wants to be in. He knows what makes him feel better.
Never lift him up by his stomach or under his stomach. The increased pressure could actually cause his stomach and spleen to rupture.
If possible, when moving him, make sure that the back part of his body is lower than his upper body. This will help to ease his breathing.

Stomach flip and bloat are very serious conditions, and if your dog is showing these signs and symptoms, take him to the veterinarians as fast as possible. Make sure that your vet knows that stomach flip is a possibility. It doesn’t have to be a life-threatening situation, as long as you act fast and keep calm.
