Belgian Malinois – Facts about the Breed

The Belgian Malinois a.k.a Belgian Shepherd Dog is a recognized breed in the U.S. It takes its name from the Belgian city of Malines. The dogs are energetic, alert, agile, and learn fast. Consequently, this dog from the sheepdog family is quite often used by police departments and the military in the same manner as they use German Shepherds. In fact, these two are the breeds of choice for use as working dogs in the U.S. These dogs weigh less than the German Shepherds making it easier for their handlers to carry them when being parachuted to a destination. In Europe too, the Malinois is favored for use in search-and-rescue and also trained for protection sports.

A Belgian Malinois is a medium-sized dog; it has a distinctive look with a black mask, black erect ears, and a short coat that is mahogany in color but with hair tips ending in black. This coat is accepted as the breed standard. Dogs with grey and black coats are available too. These males in this species of squarely-built dogs can weigh up to 75 pounds and measure up to 66 cm at the withers. Females can be 61 cm in height and tilt the scales at 65 pounds. The dogs have a lifespan of 10-12 years. Common health problems with the breed include cataracts, epilepsy, thyroid conditions, and hip dysplasia.

The appearance of the breed can be defined as well-balanced. A well-balanced head that is proportionate to the body and a gait that is neither ungainly nor cumbersome.

Keeping in character with their reputation as a great working dog, the Malinois is happiest when it is doing something. In terms of temperament, the dog is confident and will protect its owners. It can be a little reserved with those it does not know but does not display overt aggression with strangers. These dogs need plenty of exercise. Proper obedience training is essential; this is not very difficult as the Malinois understands the relationship between successful task completion and rewards. At the same time, these are dogs with personality and attitude; you need to let them know from the beginning that you’re the alpha male and that they are supposed to obey you. Off-the-leash activity is best for these dogs and it gives them a good workout. These dogs thrive in cool climates.

You can keep a Malinois as a pet even if you’re an apartment owner so long as the animal gets its exercise.
