Low Budget and Affordable Pet Care

Bringing home a pet means an addition to the family. Our pets bring into our lives joys, anxieties, fun, frolic, and care that are similar to what we experience with respect to human members of the family. And then there are expenses. Pet parents with more than one pet obviously face greater expenses.

Therefore, if we can educate and inform ourselves on how to make pet care affordable, it will help us save money every day of the month.

Make a list of expenses and budget for them. Food, boarding, training, medicine, and unexpected costs should be budgeted for. Then try to chip and chop from the estimated budgeted costs based on the ideas given below.

If you can bring up your pet cat or dog on a diet of organic home-cooked food, you may save a lot of money as compared to purchasing canned / processed food. Or you can feed your pet a mix of both. A mix of freshly cooked and leftover meat plus veggies will provide your dog with tasty nutritious food.

Keep an eye open for discounts whether at the pet section of the local supermarket or online. Avail discounts as and when you have to; but keep in mind to do so only on products that your pet needs and ones you are sure will agree with the animal. Remember to check “use by dates” on perishable discounted stuff.

Bring home a puppy or a kitten from an established breeder that gives a certificate of health to the animal. This, in fact should be the first thing to do. This will help you save on long term health expenses for the animal. Another thing you can do is to bring home an adult from a pet shelter that is properly trained and healthy. This way you can cut out the expenses of bringing up a small animal to adulthood, but then you also miss out on the fun.

Take a call on whether you wish your pet to have a litter; if not, then consider getting the animals spayed or neutered.

Train yourself to take care of your pet to the extent possible; trim the animal’s nails, groom it, take it for walks, bathe it, if at all it requires administering of medication do that as well. You save on the cost of visits to a pet groomer and home visits by a vet. Take good care of the pet so that the chances of it contracting a condition are minimized. Brush the pet’s teeth so that it does not have to face dental health issues. Other aspects of preventive care meant to keep the animal safe and your expenses down include having it on a leash when taking it for a walk; checking it and checking it periodically for lice and other parasites. Give it exercise and don’t let it get obese and lazy.

If you think you’re better off saving every month for your pet’s care then do that or consider getting a pet insurance. You’ll need to shop around for the most affordable pet insurance that fits your budget and fulfills your pet’s healthcare requirements as well. Factors to consider include the pet’s age, gender, breed, present health, and of course your budget.

Choose a vet with due diligence; the pet doctor has to be capable and with a very good reputation. Needless to say, he should be considerate towards your pocket too. Check with your vet if you can administer generic drugs instead of brand-name medicine to your pet.

Having a pet in the household means committed responsibility and you have to be up to it. Do so wisely.
