Japanese dog breeds such as the Shiba Inu, Japanese Terrier, Japanese Spitz, Hokkaido, Japanese Chin, and Akita Inu are very popular in America. Americans were introduced to Japanese dog breeds in the early part of the twentieth century.
Japanese Chin – The Japanese Chin is a small dog with big liquid eyes, unlike many other Japanese dog breeds that have evolved from hunting dogs, the Japanese Chin has always been a companion dog. These dogs have the unique distinction of having very distinct cat-like characteristics. They love to be around people and can be trained to do quite a few amusing tricks. Unlike a few other small dog breeds, these dogs are not given to what may seem like unnecessary shrill barking. They grow no more than 11 inches in height and weigh between 7-9 pounds. It has a life expectancy of around 10 years.
Hokkaido – The Hokkaido is a dog breed that originates from the prefecture of the same name. It is distinguished by its small triangular ears and eyes that look like slits from afar. It has two coats of fur. The dog requires a lot of activity; it will do well with kids if trained from its puppy days. The Hokkaido was once used as a hunting dog trained to bring down bears. Amongst Japanese dog breeds, it is highly regarded for its bravery. This dog with a very keen sense of direction has been designated a national monument in Japan.
Akita Inu – The Akita Inu is probably the most famous of the Japanese dog breeds known to outsiders. It is a big dog and belongs to the Spitz family. The Akita Inu has a double coat to help it stay warm during snowy winters in the mountains of North Japan from where the breed comes. The animal has a lifespan of up to 15 years and can weigh as much as up to 130 pounds. This sturdy dog requires firm handling; it does not take kindly to strangers. They are happiest working alone or at most in pairs. The dogs display loyalty and affection towards their master and his family, but if you’re a first-time dog owner, pick another breed.
Japanese Terrier – The Japanese Terrier excites the fancy of dog lovers in America and other places outside Japan because little is known about it. It is a rare breed amongst Japanese dog breeds, even in Japan. It makes an affectionate and playful companion dog. It’s a sensitive creature that is likely to attach itself with one individual in the household. The short slick coat is usually white with black being the color of the head. The ears of the Japanese Terrier fold forward. These dogs are up to 13 inches at the shoulder and weigh no more than nine pounds.
Shiba Inu – The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the Japanese dog breeds. It reaches no more than 11 inches at the withers and tilts the scales at 25 pounds. In the earlier days, representatives of this breed were trained for hunting birds, flushing them out of their hiding places. The animal has strong hunting instincts and you are better off not leaving it alone with other small animals that may be fair game for this breed. Shiba puppies are easy to train and housebreak.
For me Akita Inu is the best of all the Japanese dog breeds. Nice list.
