Cat Grooming

After 17 years of short haired cats, a starved looking long haired cat decided it was time to leave the streets and move onto my front porch and back deck. A couple of weeks later, she had a name, a clean bill of health and a home — and I had my first long haired cat. I also had a house full of black and white cat hair. After being told about the FURminator, I ordered the small size (now marketed with a different color handle as a cat model) with more than a degree of skepticism. Boy was I wrong. I use this on Gypsy a couple of times a week and it has eliminated the shedding problem. She enjoys being brushed and the amount of undercoat it removes is simply unbelievable. I demonstrated it to a neighbor with a Maine Coon and she immediately ordered one. Even my 15 year old short hair enjoys being brushed and while not as dramatic as the case of the long haired cat, the amount of fur removed is impressive. In both cases, the cat’s coats are left sleek and shiny and they don’t have hairball issues. I would advise people to run a flea comb through their cats coat after using the FURminator just to remove all of the dislodged fur.

I was sold on the Zoom Groom for all four of my cats til we tried the Furminator on a friend’s recommendation. I thought the cost was a lot–but there is a guarantee, so figured the Furminator was worth a try.

My 18 year old Exotic shorthair, Rambo, loved it and he hates just about everything. (He earned his name) He sat still long enough for us to groom a whole cat off of him–and better yet, he doesn’t run when one of us picks up the tool.

Our thick-coated tabby also liked the furminator. She tolerates grooming fairly well, but her coat just explodes at shedding time. She’d been recently groomed with the Zoom Groom and still we got a LOT of hair off of her.

Now, my two suede coated Siamese don’t care that much for the tool. Heather, who is normally pretty laid back, resisted. We got very little hair off of her–so the Zoom Groom works for her–and she likes it, so we’ll stick with it. Same with her brother.

Still, the tool is well worth the price if it will help keep our senior cat clean. he doesn’t care for the hairball remedies and grooming is the only preventative we can use.

This is a very sturdy tool and will probably last for ages. I have both a short and long haired cat, and it works wonders on both. Other brushes just weren’t getting all the dead fur off the short hair or random mats out of the long hair, this one tool serves all my purposes. I’ve had it for a couple months and use it every few days. There is noticeably less fur on my furniture and rugs, and the cats seem to enjoy it. Their coats look and feel great. I am very pleased with this product.

When you have a short hair cat, most often you can’t tell how bad they are matting or shedding by just looking at them. A few light strokes of this comb and I peeled off tons of loose hair. Her coat looks fantastic and she danced around like she just got back from the beauty parlor.

Not only goes this magically work loose the hair, but it seems to give a good massage, and does a fairly good job of keeping the loose hair on the brush.

I’ve since purchased another of these, for a gift for my sister’s cat (who seems to shed whenever he throws his massive bulk around) and two of the Zoom Groom For Dogs for two cockers my mother owns.

In all cases, they’ve worked wonders.

However, I have found that this brush is not as easy to handle as the one that is available for dogs.

Overall, I can’t recommend this product enough; Kong sure knows how to make their products.

My orange cat has medium-length hair and absolutely loves this thing. the sight of it will cause him to immediately jump on your lap in anticipation. i heard the zoom groom is meant to simulate the feel of the cat’s mother’s tongue – hence the deep connection. regardless, i highly recommend it.

Don’t expect to be wow’d, but it does pick up some loose fur. If your cat likes to be be petted, he’ll love it. Doesn’t seem to oversensitize or irritate them like some grooming products – so less likely you’ll get a “hey, stop!” nip if your cat is so inclined.

This is a regular grooming product, not a once a month deal – it doesn’t deal that well with grabbing large quantities of fur.

But solid enough and reliable.

The glove worked OK, but we have a brush that works much better, sorry I don’t know the brand name.

Also, the glove is rather difficult to clean off.

I have two cats, one is 3 years old and the another is 1 1/2 years old. The oldest loves to be brushed. If you leave a hand-handle brush out, she will sit on the handle and rub her face on the brush. The youngest hated to be brushed and I didn’t expect her to like this product. As expected, my oldest took to this product the minute it was introduced, the youngest could care less about it. But out of the blue, one night I sat in the floor to brush my oldest and the youngest wanted to be brushed. A couple days later, the youngest was using the product. Since the two of them have a mother-daughter type relationship, I figured the youngest was “patterning” herself after the oldest.

Now, they don’t walk through the brush like the cat in the picture. They sit in front of it and rub their face and neck. So this product is simply for their enjoyment and does not replace regular brushing.

They loved it before it was fully out of the box.

I was a bit hesitant to purchase this item for my two cats because of the mixed reviews. That said, boy am I glad I listened to my gut because it was right – they LOVE their new fantasy brush. It was very easy to assemble – the ends have plastic nubs that slide right into the base. The bristles are stiff but I did not hurt my hands in the assembly of this brush. The cats were immediately there, rubbing their heads and necks on the bristles.

My cats have always loved to be brushed with anything even resembling a brush – they even try to brush themselves by rolling on brushes, lint things, etc on the counter or floor. If your cats like to be brushed so much that they will try to brush themselves, this is a very worthwhile item.
